About the Artist

Carlos Detres was raised in Central Florida near the funhouses, dilapidated family resorts and roadside attractions that had spread from the nucleus of the Magic Kingdom. The frustrating structure of academics did nothing to convince him of the value of advanced education at a university. He dropped out of college and moved to New York City where he was exposed to the breadth of visual art and literature created during the Surrealist movement at a temporary exhibit produced by the Metropolitan Museum of Art. This exhibit demonstrated what could be done with art; how it could transcend the physical and material world to communicate with ghosts or dreams or even oneself.

In 2007, he began to publish a series of chapbooks of poetry, surrealist short stories, art and photography called the Whiskey Dregs to demonstrate how the great cultures of society synthesize from the outcasts that it produces. The photography and writing he made during this period led to work at Consequence of Sound, New Museum and eventually ad and public relation agencies throughout New York City. The Whiskey Dregs was pivotal in development and discipline but it was also a trip to New Orleans, the same year of the publication’s debut, that was transformative. The city felt a familiar home. After over a decade of living in New York City, he moved with his wife to New Orleans where his ideas and concepts could be adapted and nourished. He has since produced award winning fine art photography that has been exhibited at numerous galleries throughout the United States.
